“Von der Leyen II” Commission approved; Commissioner for Transport also confirmed

The European Parliament’s approval of the second von der Leyen Commission marks a critical milestone in defining Europe’s direction over the next five years. Securing 370 votes in favour, the College of Commissioners is set to officially take office on 1 December 2024. With an ambitious agenda, the new Commission is committed to addressing the pressing challenges Europe faces in competitiveness, sustainability, and security.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, newly confirmed as EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, emphasised the urgency and significance of his role in this transformative period. Tzitzikostas expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the European Parliament and vowed to dedicate all his energy to tackling the challenges in transport and tourism. In his inaugural statement, he underscored the responsibility he now holds to deliver tangible improvements for European citizens.

Tzitzikostas elaborated on his vision for the sector, focusing on making European transport systems smarter, safer, and more competitive while advancing sustainability. He highlighted the need to modernise and enhance infrastructure, making it more resilient to evolving demands. Additionally, he stressed the importance of strengthening the maritime sector as a key driver of economic growth.

President Ursula von der Leyen also outlined her vision for the new Commission, reiterating her commitment to closing Europe’s innovation gap, advancing the European Green Deal’s goals, and reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy in an increasingly uncertain global environment. With the confirmation of the von der Leyen II Commission, Europe is poised to tackle its challenges head-on, setting the stage for a more sustainable, secure, and competitive future.
