The air cargo industry plays a vital role in facilitating the efficient transportation of goods across borders and continents. Some sectors like perishables, medicines and flowers, but also high value goods like semiconductor machines are highly dependent on air freight.
To make air freight more accessible to shippers, it is essential to implement global standards that ensure better service levels, smooth and timely exchange of information, and sufficient availability of slots for air freight operations.
Cargo iQ: Improving Service Quality
European Shippers' Council and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) are working together within the Cargo iQ pilot initiative. Cargo iQ is a collaborative, multi-stakeholder supply chain community that develops and implements quality and performance management standards to continuously enhance the value of air freight for its customers.
Today’s environment has increased the complexity of air cargo operations. A constructive dialogue between air cargo stakeholders and users is necessary to drive improvements in service quality and operational excellence.
Slot allocation
The EU slot allocation system must be revised to better support full freighter operations. As aviation demand continues to grow faster than airport capacity, many airports are nearing or have already reached their operational limits. This presents serious challenges for full-freighter flights. A more flexible and strategic approach to slot management is essential.
EU legislation should ensure that slot allocation policies address the specific needs of cargo traffic and allow airports to fully support this vital sector.
