Shifting cargo to rail, new shift2030 initiative

Last week, 28 March 2022, shift2030 – an enterprise that promotes the modal shift – launched the Time2Shift action to provide practical information to shippers and carriers about shifting their cargo to energy-saving rail.

Transport on rail consumes five times less energy than diesel trucks, making rail transport cheaper and more climate-friendly at the same time.

Time2Shift shall serve as an entry point for shippers and carriers to learn more about combined transport and how to save energy by shipping their cargo from road to rail or both in an economical and environmental manner.

New services will be introduced soon to Time2Shift, aimed at supporting shippers and carriers shift to rail, for example by ramping-up the “rail coach”, in co-operation with chambers of commerce. In addition, “Success Stories” will showcase already currently available solutions.

According to shift2030’s Executive Director Sebastian Ruckes, this initiative is expected to receive broad support from a wide range of stakeholders: governments, the chambers of commerce, shipper and transport associations. Individual advantages of the road and rail shall be considered. “In particular, combined transport using rail and road provides innovative, competitive and sustainable transport solutions. Here, trucks are absolutely needed“, says Ruckes.

The initiative is kindly supported by: Allianz pro Schiene, Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam (EGP), modility, Netzwerk Europäischer Eisenbahnen (NEE), Rail-Flow, Railpool, and UIRR.
