On 6 June 2024, Reducing CO2 Emissions from Heavy-Duty Vehicles regulation was officially published in the Official Journal of the European Union and was applied from 1 July 2024.
Key points of Reducing CO2 emissions of HDVs include:
• Stricter CO2 emission targets: the regulation establishes new, more ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets for HDVs:
o Maintain the existing 2025 target currently set at a 15% emissions reduction for heavy lorries weighing over 16 tonnes.
o A 45% emissions reduction from 2030 (increased from 30%).
o A 65% emissions reduction from 2035.
o A 90% emissions reduction from 2040.
• Incentives for clean technology: it includes incentives for the production of zero and low emission vehicles, encouraging a shift towards cleaner technologies.
• Compliance and monitoring: the European Commission will monitor compliance, with penalties for non-compliance.
• Alignment with climate goals: this regulation supports the EU´s climate neutrality goals, contributing to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
