Over EUR 22 billion requested to enhance the Trans-European Transport network

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) received 408 applications requesting over EUR 22 billion co-funding from the Connecting Europe Facility by the call deadline of 30 January 2024. This represents an oversubscription of over 3 times the total budget of EUR 7 billion available for this call for proposals.

The Connecting Europe Facility for Transport is the key EU funding instrument for the construction and upgrade of sustainable transport infrastructure in Europe. It aims to complete and modernise the Trans-European Transport network, with a focus on the development of cross-border links. CEF Transport contributes directly to the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy.

Overall, the new projects aim to contribute to:
– enhancing major interoperable transport axes along the Core Network Corridors,
– improving safety and resilience of the network,
– increasing the capacity and performance of the rail, inland waterways and short sea shipping infrastructure, within an integrated multimodal transport system.
