ITF on decarbonising shipping

Ahead of the IMO meetings last week, the International Transport Forum of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development issued a report ‘Decarbonising Maritime Transport. Pathways to zero-carbon shipping by 2035’. This report examines how to decarbonise international shipping by 2035. ITF explains that it is possible to reach zero-carbon emissions from shipping within this timeframe. To do this, according to the report, the combination of technological, operational, and alternative energy measures and involvement of ship owners, national governments, ports, and shippers is essential.

ITF recommends:
– to set a clear, ambitious emissions-reduction target to drive decarbonisation of maritime transport;
– to support the realisation of emissions-reduction targets with a comprehensive set of policy measures;
– to provide smart financial incentives to advance the decarbonisation of maritime shipping.
