The role of the EU budget in the Fit for 55 package

On the 9th of December 2021, the Committee on Budgets held an exchange of views with Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans on the rule of the EU budget in the Fit for 55 package. The debate focused on the earmarking, own-resource, and the Social Climate Fund. As noted by Johan Van Overtveldt (ECR, BE), Chair, the Committee requested the exchange of view for some time. He underlined that the meeting would focus on the interface between climate action and the EU budget; the dossiers on ETS, CBAM, social climate fund, and the upcoming initiative on own resources and MFF were mutually linked. He also reminded that the Committee would provide opinions on all those files, and has been tasked to monitor the overall consistency and coherence of the package.
