Shippers are invited to participate in the rail stakeholders’ meeting organised in the framework of the European Rail Freight Line System project on the 27th of February 2019 in Frankfurt.
The European Rail Freight Line System (ERFLS) is a new concept of liner intermodal freight trains. It has been developed recently under the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
One basic result of ERFLS is that the elaborated concept is feasible on the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. Cornerstones of the concept are smart terminals reducing dwell times, requiring an adaption in the terminal at relatively low costs. With several short stops at terminals along transport corridors such as the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, intermodal units get loaded or unloaded. By building a system of terminals along a corridor, transport of goods by train will become more flexible and modal shift from road to rail at regional level is fostered.
At the Stakeholder event the project partners will present the concept of the project and the ERFLS recommendations. This presentation will be followed by a discussion about the opportunities to implement such a system and possible next steps for realizing “ERFLS trains” between smart terminals in order to demonstrate the concept and its advantages in practice. To gain from the advantages of the ERFLS system, a cooperation between shippers, infrastrusture managers, and terminal managers is needed.
