In response to Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis’ keynote speech at the EU Sustainable Investment Summit 2024, European Shippers Council applauds the EU’s commitment to a fair and inclusive green transition. Dombrovskis emphasised the urgency of sustainable investment, and European Shippers’ Council acknowledges the challenges and opportunities in achieving a net-zero industrial system.
ESC is already involved in different European projects that are dealing with sustainability and are financed by European funds. ESC also endorses the role of sustainable finance tools such as the EU taxonomy system and green bonds. The EU taxonomy is a cornerstone of the EU’s sustainable finance framework and an important market transparency tool. It helps direct investments to the economic activities most needed for the transition, in line with the European Green Deal objectives. Shippers agree with the importance of funding for international trade, showing their commitment to due diligence all along the supply chain.
Overall, ESC supports the EU’s ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets and efforts to diversify energy supplies, accelerate renewable energy use, and promote environmentally friendly production. As Dombrovskis stated, “the global community must continue to react; by coordinating measures, initiatives and policies, and working together with industry”. ESC remains dedicated to contributing to a greener future.
