Why EU-certified parking matters for shippers

“For cargo owners, requiring EU-certified parking is far more than a box-ticking exercise—it is a strategic decision that protects cargo, people, and reputation”, emphasised ESC Secretary General Godfried Smit during last week’s ESPORG webinar. Certified parking shows due diligence in supply-chain security, meets EU transport, insurance, and audit standards, and provides a strong legal defense if incidents occur. Simply being able to demonstrate that “we required EU-certified parking” can make all the difference.

Insurance and financial considerations further reinforce the importance of certified parking. Insurers increasingly scrutinise where and how cargo is parked, and using certified facilities can lower premiums, reduce deductibles, and prevent claim rejections, particularly for high-value goods such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, spirits, and luxury items.

Driver welfare is another critical factor. While drivers may not be shippers’ employees, their conditions directly affect delivery reliability. EU-certified parks provide safe rest environments, sanitary facilities, and reduced risk of crime, resulting in fewer delays, less fatigue, and stronger relationships with carriers.

Finally, certified parking supports Environmental, Social, and Governance framework (ESG) and corporate responsibility objectives. By enhancing safety, human rights, and ethical logistics practices, it strengthens Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting, satisfies audit requirements, and protects brand reputation. Many multinational shippers now include secure parking requirements in contracts for this reason alone, recognising that it safeguards not just cargo, but people and reputation.
