Towards greener, smarter, and more efficient port operations: Port Call Optimization Network

The Port Call Optimization Network (PCO Network) brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including ports, terminals, shipping lines, nautical and ship service providers, and project consortia.

United by a common mission, the PCO Network works to accelerate the adoption and harmonisation of global standards for nautical, operational, and administrative data across the port ecosystem. While not a formal organisation, the network’s collaborative, international model enhances both the feasibility and impact of its initiatives.

Supporting Cargo Owners
The PCO Network is committed to improving the performance of maritime and port operations—not only for direct actors but also for Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCOs). Improved advance visibility of cargo arrival times will allow BCOs to better plan related onshore logistics and transportation activities, resulting in improved supply chain efficiency and cost management.

To ensure these benefits are fully realised, the PCO Network actively invites greater participation from BCOs. Their involvement is essential to aligning outcomes with real-world operational needs across the entire logistics chain.

Scope and Benefits
The PCO Network promotes a port- and trade-agnostic approach to port call processes, based on established frameworks including IMO regulations and BIMCO contractual practices.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduced emissions during voyages and in port areas
  • Improved safety and regulatory compliance
  • Cleaner port environments
  • Lower operational costs for all actors across the maritime logistics chain

Together, these outcomes represent a significant advancement toward the sustainability and efficiency of global shipping.

Collaboration and Support
The PCO Network’s outreach and communications are supported in part by the MISSION and DYNAPORT projects, funded by the European Union.
