Sustainability

Sustainability is an important driver of change in European freight and logistics. EU policy is increasingly focused on reducing emissions while maintaining the competitiveness of European industry, strengthening supply-chain resilience and improving access to clean energy and technologies.

The regulatory framework has developed significantly in recent years. The Omnibus I package has simplified and amended parts of the EU sustainability reporting and due diligence framework, while measures such as the EU ETS, CBAM and FuelEU Maritime are being implemented. At the same time, the Clean Industrial Deal and related initiatives put greater emphasis on competitiveness, investment, affordable energy and resilient supply chains.

For shippers, the key challenges are the cost of compliance, regulatory predictability, access to reliable data and the availability of infrastructure, fuels and technologies needed to reduce emissions.

ESC supports a proportionate and coherent approach to sustainability that delivers the EU's environmental objectives while maintaining the competitiveness and resilience of European supply chains.
