European Shippers’ Council welcomes EU Omnibus I Package

European Shippers’ Council (ESC) welcomes the formal adoption of the European Union’s Omnibus I package on 16 December 2025, which brings key changes to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). The Council of the European Union has also confirmed the political agreement reached in the trilogue negotiations, providing much-needed clarity for European shippers.

The Omnibus I package recalibrates sustainability requirements to make them more practical for companies managing complex logistics and supply chains. The revised rules narrow the number of companies directly subject to CSRD reporting and CSDDD due diligence, easing administrative and operational burdens without weakening the EU’s broader sustainability objectives.

Several obligations have been simplified or removed. Mandatory climate transition plans are no longer required, and information requests along supply chains have been streamlined to better reflect the realities of day-to-day operations. This allows shippers to focus on managing risks and improving sustainability performance, rather than dealing with overly complex reporting requirements.

The package also sets out a clear timetable. Member States must transpose the directive into national law by 31 December 2025, and it will enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. The revised CSDDD rules are expected to take effect from July 2029, giving shippers time to adjust compliance systems, internal processes, and supplier arrangements.

For European shippers, Omnibus I is a positive step toward sustainable logistics that remain both competitive and practical. By balancing ambition with feasibility, the new framework supports the industry’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility while reducing indirect reporting pressures across supply chains.
