European Shippers Council supports 90% emissions reduction goal by 2040

European Shippers Council fully supports the European Commission’s proposal to set a binding greenhouse gas reduction target of 90% by 2040, compared to 1990 levels, as part of the EU Climate Law. ESC recognises that this ambitious target is a critical step in the EU’s journey toward climate neutrality by 2050 and is essential for upholding the EU’s leadership role in the global fight against climate change.

ESC acknowledges the importance of a decarbonised economy for the long-term prosperity and sustainability of the region. ESC believes that the proposed flexibilities, such as the use of high-quality international credits and domestic removals within the EU Emissions Trading System, provide the necessary tools for industry and Member States to meet the targets in a fair, cost-effective, and socially responsible manner.

However, ESC shares the concerns raised by Antonio Decaro, Chair of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee, that flexibility should not undermine the rigor or ambition of the target. ESC stresses that any flexibility mechanisms must ensure that reductions are real, scientifically robust, and do not compromise the overarching goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. Every decision made today affects the future of our economy, society, and environment. ESC encourages the European Parliament and Member States to work swiftly toward a final agreement on this ambitious target, keeping in mind the global urgency of limiting climate change to 1.5°C, in line with the Paris Agreement.

ESC remains committed to contributing to the transition toward a low-carbon economy, including through investment in cleaner logistics solutions and technologies. ESC will continue to engage with policymakers to ensure that any climate policy reflects both environmental imperatives and the practical realities of European businesses.

ESC calls on all stakeholders, from the public and private sectors to civil society, to collaborate in creating a future where sustainable and competitive logistics play a vital role in achieving the EU’s climate objectives.
