European Shippers’ Council spotlights trade opportunities at Import Export Show 2025

19 November, 2025, European Shippers’ Council actively participated in the Import Export Show 2025, hosted by the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, engaging with senior policymakers, business leaders, and trade experts to address the rapidly evolving global trade environment and its implications for European shippers.

At the heart of the discussions was the pressing need for customs modernisation and streamlined trade processes. Workshops and panels examined digitalisation initiatives, and reforms in cross-border customs that are critical for shippers navigating post-Brexit Europe. ESC emphasised that efficient, transparent, and harmonised customs procedures are essential for maintaining competitive supply chains across the continent.

For ESC, maintaining strong EU–UK trade relations and partnerships is a priority. Experts highlighted the impact of global power shifts, rising protectionism, and evolving trade agreements, from the UK–India Free Trade Agreement to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Delegates explored how regulatory alignment, particularly in areas such as digital trade legislation and environmental measures, can reduce friction for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions.

A key focus for ESC was the discussion on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM) and EU-UK linked emissions trading systems (ETS). Aligning UK and EU approaches to carbon regulation is essential for shippers managing cross-border freight while meeting sustainability targets.

The conference reinforced the role of economic diplomacy, strategic partnerships, and free trade agreements in unlocking opportunities for exporters and maintaining Europe’s competitiveness in global markets. ESC stressed that active engagement in shaping trade policy, supporting EU–UK cooperation, and driving customs reforms is critical for ensuring smooth, efficient, and sustainable supply chains.
