European Shippers’ Council Participates in the ALICE Innovation Summit

23-24 October 2024, European Shippers’ Council took part in the ALICE Innovation Summit, an important forum that brought together European policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to discuss the digital transformation of transport and logistics. The discussions focused on how EU digital and sustainability strategies are moving from regulation to implementation, shaping the future of freight transport across Europe.

A focus at the summit was the introduction of electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI), which will enable companies to exchange freight documentation digitally instead of using paper. This marks a significant step towards a fully digital logistics environment, improving efficiency and reducing administrative burdens.

One of the most promising developments is the potential use of QR codes at border crossings, allowing authorities to verify truck contents without opening them. This innovation enhances visibility and security, offering shippers quicker and more transparent access to information.

Although eFTI compliance will become mandatory in 2027, shippers were encouraged to begin preparations now to ensure readiness. Annika Kroon from DG MOVE opened the summit by linking these initiatives to the European Mobility Data Space and the Industrial Maritime Strategy, placing digitalisation at the core of the EU’s sustainable transport agenda.

The summit also explored the growing role of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins in logistics, showcasing how these technologies help predict delays, optimise routes and simulate real-world supply chains. The concept of the Physical Internet was presented as a framework for future European freight systems.

Other discussions highlighted automation and the EU Port Strategy, focusing on cleaner, smarter, and better-connected logistics hubs. Together, these innovations illustrate Europe’s determination to build a sustainable, digital and efficient transport ecosystem.
