European Shippers’ Council co-organised workshop Advancing Maritime Sustainability and Digitalisation

European Shippers’ Council, in partnership with the PERMAGOV project, on 27 October 2025 co-organised a workshop titled “From Fragmented to Connected: Advancing the Green Deal Goals in the Maritime Supply Chain Through Digitalisation.” The session brought together stakeholders from across the maritime supply chain to explore how digitalisation and governance approaches can accelerate decarbonisation and sustainability in line with the European Green Deal.

The workshop focused on three key pillars: interoperability, coordination, and transparency. Participants emphasised the importance of harmonised digital standards, practical reporting frameworks, and technical architectures that support smooth data exchange across ships, ports, and logistics networks. Discussions highlighted the need for inclusive, flexible coordination mechanisms that leverage existing international and regional frameworks, while promoting trust, shared accountability, and capacity-building across regions.

Transparency was identified as a critical enabler for sustainability, with participants underscoring the value of reliable, auditable, and accessible environmental and carbon data. Digital tools and secure infrastructures were recognised as essential for ensuring traceability, fostering business value, and supporting greener procurement decisions.

The workshop concluded with a shared commitment to continued dialogue and collective action. Key priorities identified for future work include: advancing globally compatible digital standards and reporting structures, strengthening governance and coordination mechanisms, investing in secure data infrastructures, and fostering incentives, capacity-building, and collaborative learning across the maritime ecosystem.

European Shippers’ Council remains dedicated to supporting sustainable and digital transformation in the maritime sector, working collaboratively with industry partners, policymakers, and research initiatives to deliver on the objectives of the Green Deal.
