The EU-funded SUNDANSE project has launched a new €200,000 Open Call to support local and regional authorities in improving the health and resilience of Europe’s freshwater ecosystems. Two selected regions from 31 eligible European and associated countries will each receive up to €100,000, together with technical and scientific support, to implement practical measures for healthier rivers and freshwater basins.
The initiative focuses on better management of water flows and river sediments, helping authorities monitor sediment movement, assess pollution, and improve water quality. While these issues are often overlooked, they play a vital role in protecting water resources, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
For shippers, healthy and well-managed inland waterways are more than an environmental objective—they are also essential for maintaining reliable transport corridors. Inland waterway transport depends on stable water levels and effective sediment management to ensure navigability, reduce disruptions caused by siltation or low water, and support efficient multimodal supply chains. Investments in freshwater management can therefore contribute to both environmental protection and the long-term resilience of European logistics networks.
Applications are open until 30 September 2026, with two information webinars scheduled for 29 July and 16 September 2026 to support potential applicants. Eligible authorities from 31 European and associated countries are invited to submit projects aimed at improving freshwater basin management and public awareness.
