CEF transport: over €1 billion in requests for alternative fuel infrastructure submitted under AFIF

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has received 95 project proposals, collectively requesting over €1 billion in co-funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport- Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF). The proposals were submitted ahead of the second cut-off deadline on 11 June 2025.

The submitted projects aim to advance the deployment of alternative fuel supply infrastructure across Europe. CINEA will now begin assessing the admissibility and eligibility of each application, followed by a detailed evaluation based on the call’s specific award criteria. The outcome of the selection process is expected to be announced by early 2026.

This call under AFIF supports the development of electric vehicle recharging stations, hydrogen refuelling stations, electricity supply points, and ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities. It covers infrastructure for road, maritime, inland waterway, and air transport, contributing to the EU’s overarching objective of decarbonising the transport sector along the TEN-T network.

Launched on 29 February 2024 with a total budget of €1 billion, the AFIF call has already allocated part of the funding following its first cut-off in September 2024. As of the second cut-off, €570 million in funding remains available.

European Shippers’ Council has welcomed this initiative as a positive step towards accelerating the green transition in European transport. ESC praises the EU’s sustained commitment to sustainable logistics infrastructure and highlights the need to ensure alternative fuel options are readily accessible to shippers across all modes of transport.
